Traditionally the day after Thanksgiving where most consumers start their holiday shopping. Many (if not all) retail outlets offer sales to bring in said customers. It is called 'black' friday because it is considered the 'official' start of the holiday shopping season, much like Black Tuesday was the start of the Depression (1929 Stock Market Crash). In addition, the 'black' also refers to when paper ledgers were still used, black ink referred to profit. Although Black Friday is the day where the highest volume of consumer traffic is seen, it does not carry the highest volume of sales. Usually this day is Christmas Eve or the last Saturday before Christmas. Recently some retail outlets have begun referring to Black Friday as Green Friday, to curb the common association of the color black to something of bad or negative nature.

everyday of the year if you're smart enough
God, those stupid so-called Black Friday deals are available everyday. Whats up with ppl who can't take a look outside retail mall stores? Who wait on huge lines for literally days when you can get the same deals online?

The day after Thanksgiving, on which thousands of people flock to the stores like lemmings, risking getting trampled just to save a few dollars even though they have a whole month to do their Christmas shopping.

Also of note: retailers sometimes understock the shelves to create an illusion of scarcity. That "last item in the store" that you just bought was probably one of many "last items" sitting in the store room.
Black Friday makes complete nuts out the sanest people; mothers will kill each other just to get a doll for little Suzie.

The day after Thanksgiving in the US, and typially considered the busiest shopping day of the year. The term "black" is said to come from a large number companies that don't generate profits until that Friday, when they swing from the red into the black.
Disney exec: If we don't boost sales, we'll stay in the red and lose our bonuses!

Other VPs: don't worry, the day after thanksgiving we'll sell enough crap to get into the black.

exec: Thank God for Black Friday!

Day when American Christmas shoppers wait outside Wal-mart for days, just to get the best price.

Sometimes leads to the trampling/stomping of Wal-mart employees
Jim: I can't wait to go shopping! I'm gonna get all my stuff on Black Friday!

Tim: Why would you wake up at an ungodly hour to go shopping?

Jim: ...Shut it...
